Leavenworth Washington Disc Golf

Note: As of May 2009 the plans to bring Disc Golf to Lions Club Park have been dissolved.  We hope that may change in the future.

August, 2008 - Soon Leavenworth will enjoy a new disc golf course at Lions Club Park! The city council approved expenditures to create a disc golf course in the park next to city hall off U.S. Highway 2. Disc golf is sometimes thought of as Frisbee Golf.

There are two more disc golf courses in the area, one in Wenatchee and one by Lake Wenatchee at Thousand Trails Campground. (You'll also find disc golf in Bavaria)

Rich Brinkman, Leavenworth City administrator and disc golf advocate, designed an 18-hole course at the park. Baskets will mostly be on the perimeter of the park to avoid interference with other people in the park.

The course will be fairly modest so heavy hitters will likely head to Wenatchee or to Thousand Trails where there are holes that exceed 600 feet.

There area also hopes that a future professional disc golf course can be built at Leavenworth Ski Hill, and that it would be home to a professional disc golf association tour stop.

What is Disc Golf?

Disk golf is played much like traditional golf but instead of using clubs and a golf ball the players throw a flying disk. The goal is to complete a hole in the fewest number of throws.

Golfers begin by throwing a disc toward a target that is elevated and usually called a pole hole. As the players progress through the hole, they must throw each consecutive shot from the spot where the previous throw landed. Trees and other terrain features provide obstacles to challenge the golfer. At the finish of the hole, the "putt" lands in the target and the hole is completed.

A typical game takes between one and two hours and is often free at local parks. Professional quality golf discs cost around $10. Only one is needed for play.

New Player Tips:

Play with a "golf disc" instead of a recreational flying disc.

Play with a friend when you are starting to add to the fun.

Golf discs take practice to learn so don't expect to throw like a pro at the beginning.

Stop and ask other players for tips.
